Touchy Feely – Decorating with texture

We’re getting all touchy-feely this month and are looking at all the different options for decorating with texture, from furry throws and jute rugs to silky bed linen and brick walls. Texture is such an expressive way to add that extra depth to your home decor, but often its effectiveness is something that is overlooked. We look forward to exploring some textures with you in the next few weeks – here are some inspiring images to get you excited!

laid bare

Bare walls with exposed brickwork and original plaster are instant texture additions to a space. Combined with wood and softer textures on the left, it makes for a calm and comfortable space. The very chic space on the right adds even more texture with a stenciled floor tile, while the silk on the chair and scatter cushion contrasts beautifully with the raw wall behind it.

Wood has an incredible natural texture: the grain of exposed wood has for centuries inspired architects and artisans alike. Used in parquet or plank flooring, as cladding or in furniture, wood has the ability to transform a space with its warmth and rhythm.

 Concrete Evidence

The Industrial Look is very much based on the use of raw concrete. It’s a wonderfully modern texture that can be used in its simplest, natural form, as an imitation on the left or as striking checkerboard cladding on the right. I love the way all of these blocks have their own personality.

Cozied up

Fluff things up with some textured accessories: faux fur, velvet and knits are great ways to add some softness to a reading corner or sofa.

in the details

Sometimes it’s better to think small! A beautiful textured wallpaper on this chest of drawers adds a feminine touch to an otherwise nondescript piece of furniture. And if you want to keep it simple, then add a few textured accessories to a side table or display.

Knit Pick

Like wood, knits are an easy way to add texture to a space. They instantly add warmth and coziness to a room, whether it’s on a piece of furniture, a throw or a rug. This deck-chair is genius – it makes me want to pick up the knitting needles and get busy!
